Another Tuesday Night street scene in downtown Charleston, SC

Street Walkers

Considering the image:  My Tuesday nights are becoming “street scene Tuesdays” since I am out and about in the evening.  Here is a shot of the old Riviera theater on King Street in downtown Charleston.  It makes a good backdrop for capturing a street scene.  All you have to do is wait for something interesting to happen.

Making the photograph:  I wanted to capture people walking with just a bit of blurred motion, while people standing would be mostly sharp.  To do that I used ISO 800 to keep the shutter speeds relatively high, 1/15th in this case at f/4 on the EF 50mm f/1.8 Mk I.  I used my standard black and white post processing with a green filter applied, some brightness and contrast on the theater sign, and then a nice tritone when the image was done.

Calhoun and King Streets at night in Charleston, SC

Flow

Considering the image:  Calhoun and King Street in downtown Charleston is one of the busiest intersections as well as a great place to grab a java and people watch.  The Francis Marion Hotel and the Starbucks coffee shop make a great backdrop for this long exposure of the street traffic.  They also meant there would surely be people in the image.  Without them, this would be a boring shot.  There might have been more foot traffic but I suppose most of the College of Charleston students are either studying for exams or done and gone for the summer.

Making the photograph:  For this photograph out came the trusty EF 24mm f/2.8 in order to capture most of the hotel facade.  I set the camera to aperture priority,  ISO to 100 and closed down the aperture to f/18 in order to get a 10 second exposure that would render the car lights as trails.  I had to keep the overall exposure down to -2EV to prevent blown highlights on the upper level of the hotel and inside the Starbucks.  Post processing was a black and white conversion using the green filter setting and adjusting slightly, high pass contrast layer, sharpening, cropping, and tri-toning.

A stormy night on Beresford Creek.

Storm over Beresford Creek

Rain falls on the creek like a million tiny bursts of hope.  While clouds race on toward distant dreams.  The ominous glow of lights against the stormy sky gives way.  Stars shine through, regal lords over the terrestrial tempest.  Sail on, intrepid soul.

Shem Creek in Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Reflectivity

Although Tuesday nights are subdued, Shem Creek in Mt. Pleasant, SC becomes a hub of nightlife after dark.  The calm, reflective waters of the deep water creek provide seaside ambiance to dinner or a night on the town.  I consider it one of the more picturesque spots in the area at night.

I used the HDR technique for this photo in order to capture detail not only in the brightly lit bars, but also in the boats toward the rear, center of the image.  Those boats would have been in blackness in a single, straight shot metered for proper exposure on the buildings with the lights.  I gave the saturation a pretty good bump to play up the colors in the lights and on the water and because I knew color would be one of the strongest stories of the image.

A view of the Ravenel Bridge, Charleston, SC

Reflections

Another view of the Ravenel Bridge from downtown Charleston, SC.  The lighting used on the bridge is fascinating.  You can read about it here.

I spent some time today learning new sharpening and noise reduction techniques in post processing.  I used a few of them on this image and found they are much more effective than what I have previously been doing.  With more time to fine tune, this image could really clean up well and be a fine art print.  I’ve still plenty to learn first!

Saint Michael's in Charleston, SC

Saint Michael's

Here in Charleston, SC you cannot drive more than a block or two downtown without running into some sort of church building.  Saint Michael’s is probably the most well known of the buildings.  It would be hard not to include it in this project in one way or another.  While I’m not all that enthusiastic about the churches themselves, I find the architectural details compelling.  Here, the stark white steeple shows the intricate ornamentation off in the directional light treatment.
