Considering the image: My Tuesday nights are becoming “street scene Tuesdays” since I am out and about in the evening. Here is a shot of the old Riviera theater on King Street in downtown Charleston. It makes a good backdrop for capturing a street scene. All you have to do is wait for something interesting to happen.
Making the photograph: I wanted to capture people walking with just a bit of blurred motion, while people standing would be mostly sharp. To do that I used ISO 800 to keep the shutter speeds relatively high, 1/15th in this case at f/4 on the EF 50mm f/1.8 Mk I. I used my standard black and white post processing with a green filter applied, some brightness and contrast on the theater sign, and then a nice tritone when the image was done.

Considering the image: Calhoun and King Street in downtown Charleston is one of the busiest intersections as well as a great place to grab a java and people watch. The Francis Marion Hotel and the Starbucks coffee shop make a great backdrop for this long exposure of the street traffic. They also meant there would surely be people in the image. Without them, this would be a boring shot. There might have been more foot traffic but I suppose most of the College of Charleston students are either studying for exams or done and gone for the summer.
Making the photograph: For this photograph out came the trusty EF 24mm f/2.8 in order to capture most of the hotel facade. I set the camera to aperture priority, ISO to 100 and closed down the aperture to f/18 in order to get a 10 second exposure that would render the car lights as trails. I had to keep the overall exposure down to -2EV to prevent blown highlights on the upper level of the hotel and inside the Starbucks. Post processing was a black and white conversion using the green filter setting and adjusting slightly, high pass contrast layer, sharpening, cropping, and tri-toning.

Two friends sharing a smoke and a laugh at the park in North Charleston. I was out comparing focal lengths and framing for 100mm vs. 85mm as I compare new prime lenses to add to my kit bag. This one was at 100mm though I still had to do a bit of cropping. I love candid photos in black and white.

365:SIXTY
I can think of few better things to do in the late afternoon sun than sitting with someone I love at a waterfront park. I recall years ago romancing my wife with an afternoon picnic very near this spot. Today I noted this couple obviously enjoying each other’s company. I walked around so as not to intrude on their private moment.
I took exactly one exposure for today’s Project 365 entry. Its Monday. C’est la vie.

365:TWENTY-FOUR
I’m on travel to Twentynine Palms, CA today so today’s shot is more of a snapshot. Twentynine Palms is known for its murals. There are something like 54 of them throughout the little town. I’ll shoot some more of them over the next week and a half and hope to capture something more dramatic. I’d file these under “Americana”.
